“Sustainability”, the catchphrase, that has rightly caught the buzz today, when more resources than ever have already been depleted. Typically, sustainability refers to the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time (in our case, this beautiful planet that we call home).
Today, an increasing number of people are striving to be “more sustainable” and have now made it their motto to reduce their environmental footprint by trying to opt for more “eco-friendly” options and yes, I am one of them too!
However, unfortunately a number of businesses are using the term loosely, without adequate transparency and that, my fellow earthling is the problem. That coffee-cup which you just tossed in the bin thinking it’s just paper and will breakdown in the soil – its lined with a plastic that will take centuries to degrade and will therefore accumulate in the landfill.
I know your intention wasn’t bad, but the problem is that we don’t ask enough questions. The next time you go to a café, take your own cup and if that is not feasible, ask the staff – is this cup compostable?
Create a demand, it does wonders.
